Nanaimo News Bulletin • August 5, 2008
The Nanaimo DBL Timbermen didn’t end the year the way they wanted, but it wasn’t for lack of trying.
The senior B lacrosse club had a number of athletes who gave standout efforts during the 2008 West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association season. Some of those players were recognized last week at the team’s annual awards dinner.
The major award winners were Joel Cocarell, who took home Most Valuable Player honours, and Andrew Gaudet, named Rookie of the Year.
Team captain Travis Preston and veteran scorer Ken Morrison shared two trophies in 2008, as they were co-winners of the Most Popular Player and Most Inspirational Player awards. John Younger won Best Defensive Player, Tim Manson was named Most Improved Player and backup goalie Matt Soulliere was chosen Most Sportsmanlike Player. Morrison earned the nod for Best Stickhandler, Brad Jones for Best Conditioned Athlete and Joe Diplock for Unsung Hero. Jason Dubyna was recognized for his contributions to minor lacrosse and Trevor Walton received an award recognizing him as the club’s scoring leader in 2008.
Walton’s 33 goals led the WCSLA and his 58 points were second best. Cocarell ended the year eighth in league scoring with 39 points in just seven games.
Morrison, who notched 17 goals and 33 points, rewrote the Timbermen record book in 2008. Morrison now has 538 points, passing Kevin Shires (537) as the senior B club’s all-time leading scorer. This season Morrison also surpassed Pat O’Dwyer’s career goals tally of 268 to set the new club mark of 273. |
