DBL Timbermen please crowd with 11-1 win
Nanaimo News Bulletin • May 6, 2008
There’s not much room for nitpicking after the Nanaimo DBL Timbermen’s home opener Saturday.
The West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association squad was strong at all areas of the floor in an 11-1 victory over the Valley Rebels at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.
Goaltender Danny Walters was all but unbeatable and his defenders made sure the Rebels didn’t get many Grade A scoring opportunities.
“Almost all the shots came from the outside,” said Pat O’Dwyer, the team’s coach. “The defensive crew kept them at bay, hit them hard.”
Then there was the forward group, which supplied double-digit offence.
“They picked really well; they rolled really well; they moved the ball really well,” said O’Dwyer. “The ball never stood still, not once. There was a constant tempo to the offence.”
Joel Cocarell scored four times and assisted on four other Nanaimo goals. Trevor Walton and Ken Morrison each supplied a pair of goals and Kevin Bowbyes, Andrew Gaudet and Terry Hall were the other scorers for the T-men. Walters and backup Matt Soulliere combined to make 47 saves.
O’Dwyer was happy with the way his team handled the pressure of the home opener.
“There was a lot of guys on our team that hadn’t played in front of a crowd before and we were at full capacity there Saturday night,” he said.
The coach said his players had looked more nervous two nights earlier when they dropped their season-opening road game 7-4 to the Ladner Pioneers. Walton had two goals in that game; Morrison and Travis Preston had one each.
“We learned a lot out of that game and of course the result of our next game kind of proved that,” O’Dwyer said.
