DBL T-Men lose season opener
Nanaimo Daily News • May 2, 2008
An old nemesis did the Nanaimo DBL Senior B Timbermen in Thursday.
Goaltender Rob Cook left T-Men shooters shaking their heads, making 44 saves as the host Ladner Pioneers defeated Nanaimo 7-4 in West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association action at the Ladner Leisure Centre.
It was the season opener for both teams.
Cook was the difference, as he has been many times against Nanaimo over the years. The T-men had their chances, outshooting Ladner 48-35 in the game but Cook was tough to beat.
"He came up big, he stoned us," said T-Men head coach Pat O'Dwyer. "That's just how Cook is sometimes. You just cannot beat him. He's not getting any younger but he's certainly smarter and he played well."
Sean Kelley led the Ladner attack with three goals. The Pioneers held period leads of 2-1 and 6-2.
Trevor Walton had a pair of goals for Nanaimo, while captain Travis Preston and Ken Morrison added singles.
Joel Cocarell had Nanaimo's lone assist in the game.
Cook aside, O'Dwyer was somewhat pleased with his team's effort.
"I'm happy. It was just one of those things where it was our first game and it's always tough to get a win out of Ladner. It was close game."
Nanaimo will try again for its first win on Saturday (7:30 p.m.) at the Nanaimo Ice Centre in their home opener against the Valley Rebels.
