DBL Timbermen rough up Rebels
Nanaimo Daily News • May 5, 2008
The Nanaimo DBL Timbermen were looking for a feel-good game on Saturday night.
They got it in a big way.
After a disappointing 7-4 loss to open the season on Thursday in Ladner, the T-Men regrouped and reloaded, putting an 11-1 hurt on the visiting Valley Rebels in West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association play at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.
It wasn't a brutally physical game -- there wasn't a punch thrown the whole night -- but Nanaimo hurt the understaffed Rebels in may other ways, especially on the scoreboard.
"We played well. There were no mistakes," said Timbermen head coach Pat O'Dwyer. "We weren't going to pull the same crap we did in Ladner."
Assistant captain Joel Cocarell led the Nanaimo attack with four goals and four assists.
Trevor Walton and Ken Morrison each chipped in with a pair of markers while singles went to Kevin Bowbyes, Andrew Gaudet and Terry Hall.
Jim Nishiyama was the lone marksman for the Rebels, who had two Nanaimo pick-ups in their lineup, including veteran Andy 'Gump' Reynolds and Yanni Mihalatos.
Although the game was one-sided in score, the shot totals were much closer.
Nanaimo outshot Valley 60-48 with Nanaimo starter Danny Walters and back-up Matt Soulliere both playing well.
Soulliere replaced Walters early in the third period and didn't allow a goal.
"He played well," said O'Dwyer. "He's been impressive all camp. He faced two power plays and probably six or eight shots. He looked good."
O'Dwyer was wary of Valley's experience even with the few bodies they had.
"We looked really strong. Valley was shorthanded but they had a lot of experience. We could have lost to them on experience alone," said O'Dwyer.
